December 2009 News
from Campbell-Savona Jr/Sr High School
Dear 7th-12th
Grade Students and Parents:
This month we inducted 27 students into our local chapter of the National Honor
Society. I would like to congratulate
this outstanding group of individuals for their accomplishments. I look forward to watching them lead the
Campbell-Savona School community with their scholarship, service, leadership,
and character.
As we look ahead into the new
year, we are preparing for several state and local exams for 9th-12th
grade students. Our high school students
will be taking Regents exams, RCTs, and mid-term exams during the week of
January 25th. Please see information in
this newsletter and further notes home for additional information regarding
student testing schedules. As many of
you are aware, our 7th and 8th grade students have taken
state assessments during the month of January in the past. These exams are now scheduled in April and
May.
Best
wishes to all of you for a safe and happy holiday season!
Lisa Hawken

Attention all students and athletes:
Students are
dismissed from school daily at 3:05pm with the buses departing at 3:10pm. Some athletic teams have practice right after
school starting at 3:15pm or 3:30pm.
There are also extracurricular and academic support activities scheduled
after school. If students are not
scheduled for an early practice or involved in a scheduled meeting or activity,
they need to leave the building at dismissal time. Please help to communicate this to your child
and to assist them in developing a plan for getting home after school. There is SOS scheduled every Tuesday and
Thursday night from 3:10-4:10pm.
Students can attend SOS to receive homework support or to find a quiet
place to do their homework.
AFTER SCHOOL
OPPORTUNITIES AT CAMPBELL-SAVONA!
“BASE Camp II” is a new 21st Century afterschool
program that is coming to C-S in January.
The program is government funded through the “No Child Left Behind Act”
and organized to provide our students with extensive opportunities after
school. The program offers a range of
educational, developmental and recreational services for students and their
families. It is not more school.
It is a safe, productive place for children after school. The program will include time for students to
get academic support and will also provide them with recreational and craft
activities. Students who attend the
program will also have time to socialize and snack!
Base Camp II will begin January
11, 2010 at the Campbell Savona High School for grades 6 through 12. It will run from 3:10pm – 6:10pm, Monday
through Friday. Bus transportation home
will be provided for all students. An informational meeting for parents and
students will be held at the High School cafeteria on January 4th at
7:00pm. If you are unable to make this
meeting, please contact the Site Coordinator, Denise Knowles, at 527-9880 or
email dknowles@cscsd.org.
THE VALUE OF AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS
After school programs have a proven track record of
improving student grades, work habits and attendance as well as reductions in
behavior problems. Our program will
provide students with consistent enrichment activities such as music,
art, sports, conflict resolution, cultural experiences, and other alternative
ways of learning. It will improve students’
social skills, give them more confidence, create higher educational and career
aspirations, and motivate them to consistently attend school.
Juvenile crime triples during the hours from 3:00pm to
8:00pm, and it is during these same hours that children face the most serious
danger of becoming victims of crime. After
school programs are effective in reducing violence, theft, vandalism, gang
activity, and other adolescent crimes. Consistent participation in the program
will help reduce the risk of youth experimenting with alcohol and other
dangerous drugs, and teen pregnancy. It will help improve nutrition and physical activity and could
help balance work and family life for parents.
After school programs prepare youth for today’s workforce
through providing academic enrichment and teaching skills not taught during the
school day. They are important to supporting the academic and social
development of children. Please attend
the informational meeting to learn more about Base Camp II at Campbell-Savona!
Character Education
In honor of December's character trait,
kindness, The Character Club is presenting “The Giving Tree” again this
year. Students can purchase a paper ornament for 25 cents and write a
kind message or a holiday greeting to a friend or a staff member.
Each ornament will be hung from “The Giving Tree” which will be located in the
main lobby area. The Character Club feels that this is a great
opportunity to spread holiday cheer and display acts of kindness towards
others.
Cooperation was November's character
trait. Congratulations to the following students for being selected as
November’s character recognition recipients. These students were selected
by their peers and staff as exhibiting the trait cooperation.
