February
2010 News from Campbell-Savona Jr./
Dear 7th - 12th
Grade Students and Parents:
We have successfully
completed the first half of the school year, and the third marking period is
underway. Many students received revised
schedules for the 3rd marking period in homeroom this week and
started up some new classes. Additional
AIS and support time was added to some schedules as well.
As you know, the month of
January was busy with testing. Our high
school students took Regents exams, RCT exams and mid-term exams last month.
The students will receive their test scores from their teachers so they know
how they did and what they need to focus on for the remainder of the school
year. You are able to view their midterm
exam scores on their report card.
We encourage parents of
seniors to look closely at their child’s report card to make sure he/she is on
track for graduation. Mr. Burns and I
plan to meet with seniors and their parents in the near future to discuss
graduation requirements with seniors that need to focus and work diligently
during the second half of the year
If you have any questions or
concerns, please contact me at 527-9800 ext. 1451 or at lhawken@cscsd.org.
After School Expectations and Guidelines
Students are
dismissed from school daily at 3:05pm with the buses departing at 3:10pm. Some athletic teams have practice right after
school starting at 3:15pm or 3:30pm.
There are also extracurricular and academic support activities scheduled
after school. If students are not
scheduled for an early practice or involved in a supervised meeting or
activity, they need to leave the building at dismissal time. Please help to communicate this to your child
and to assist them in developing a plan for getting home after school. There is SOS scheduled every Tuesday and
Thursday night from 3:10-4:10pm.
Students can attend SOS to receive homework support or to find a quiet
place to do their homework. Our after
school activity, BASE Camp, is also running daily from 3:10-6:10pm and offers
students homework help, enrichment and recreational activities. Students not attending one of the above
supervised activities must report to the Assistant Principals Office to call
home for transportation.
After School Program: BASE Camp
BASE
Camp began January 11th for students in grades 6 through 12 and is off to a
good start. There are 51 fabulous students registered with new additions
every day. Activities include ceramics, jewelry making, scrap
booking, future financial education, aerobics, weight room conditioning,
S.P.O.R.T.S, girls club, and guest speakers from the Youth
Bureau every Wednesday. We are always looking for new
activities and ideas. Contact Denise Knowles, 527-9880 for more info.

Information for
Seniors
If you are the parent of a high school senior, you know how busy this year has been when it comes to planning for your senior’s future plans. If your senior is going to college, it is important to make sure that you stay on top of deadlines and keep in touch with schools as you hear back from them. Also, you should be filing your financial aid information such as the FAFSA form (www.fafsa.ed.gov) as well as scholarship applications. A great website to help find and locate scholarships is www.fastweb.com. Finally, if your senior has been accepted to a college, please ask them if they have notified the guidance office so that we can get it posted on the “College Acceptance Board”.
Seniors who want to order Senior Graduation Announcements through the school will have the opportunity to do so on March 9th in the Guidance Office from 11:00am-1:00pm. Catalogues and ordering information are now in senior mailboxes. Please encourage your senior to bring that information home to you.
Scheduling for 2010-11
We have begun to
think about and plan for next school year.
Mr. Burns and Mrs. Potter will soon be going into classes to meet with
students regarding their course requests for next year. Course selection is a very important time for
students. Students must make good
choices on their requests because we develop the master schedule based on their
requests. There are required courses
that students must have in order to meet graduation requirements. This is also a time for students to consider
taking electives – courses that are not required for graduation. When making their choices, students should be
sure to consult with their guidance counselor as well as their parents. Once course selections have been made, a copy
of the request form will be sent home to parents so that they can see what
classes their child has made for next year.
Please pay attention to the deadline that will be included with the
request if changes need to be made.
2nd Marking Period Incentive for 7th
and 8th Graders
The second marking
period has come to a close and we are planning an incentive activity for
students who are doing an outstanding job with their academics and
behavior. 7th and 8th
students who have passed all classes and have not had a discipline consequence
will be invited to go ice skating at the Civic Center in Corning on February
10, 2010 and to enjoy a pizza lunch while they are there. Invitations to this event will be handed out
the week of February 8, 2010.
Congratulations to eligible students and keep up the hard work!
Career Speakers come to Campbell-Savona
On January 28, 2010,
our 8th graders had the opportunity to meet with and listen to three
speakers who presented them with information about their careers. The career areas represented were chosen
based on a survey done with the 8th graders earlier in the
year. Through the hard work of the
Career Development Council, we were able to be visited by and hear information
from an area photographer, a heavy equipment operator and an SPCA Animal
Cruelty Officer. Each presenter shared
such information as the education/training needed for their jobs, possible income
and what they enjoy most about their jobs.
It was a very interesting and informative morning.
Spring Sports To Begin Soon
As the winter sports
season begins to move to league championships and sectionals, it is time to
think about spring sports. The first day
of spring Varsity, Junior Varsity and Modified practices will be Monday, March
8th. The parent/athlete
athletic handbook meeting for all spring sports teams will be held on Monday,
March 1st at
6:00pm in the high
school auditorium. Anyone planning on trying
out for a Varsity, Junior Varsity or Modified team must be at this meeting with
at least one parent if you have not already attended either the fall or winter
handbook meeting. After the handbook
meeting, coaches will have team meetings with parents. At least one parent must attend the coaches
meeting for each athlete. If a parent
and/or an athlete cannot attend this meeting there will be one make-up meeting
on Monday, March 22nd at 6:30pm in the L.G.I.
Parents will have to arrange a time with the coach of their child’s team
to make-up the coaches meeting. If an
athlete or parent does not attend these meetings then the athlete will not be
eligible to compete until the meetings have been made-up. Many of our spring sports teams will begin
competition the last week in March/first week in April if the weather
cooperates.
If a student needs
to have a sports physical to be able to begin practices, parents should contact
Lisa Fleet, our school nurse at extension 1411.
February 24 is the date that
has been set aside for make-up physicals.
Modified sports will
also begin practices on Monday March 8th. Modified competitions will begin the first
full week in April which means that players will not be able to miss very many
practices once they start to get the state required number of practices in
before their first game.
The Character Club would like to
recognize the following students for being selected for exemplifying the
character trait of the month. The

February’s character trait is Trustworthiness. The faculty and staff will be promoting and
celebrating students that exemplify this trait during the month of February.
The character club
also sponsored winter spirit week at CSCS in January. They promoted daily themes as a way to
encourage school spirit. We would like
to congratulate all of the students who participated in the activities and
showed their school spirit. It was a
great week! Thank you to the varsity
club and the middle and high school student council groups for donating money
and tickets for the daily prizes.
