November 2009 News from Campbell-Savona Jr/Sr High
School
Dear 7th-12th Grade Students and
Parents:
The first marking period has
come to an end. I hope that you are all pleased
with the report card that your child brought home this week and that many of you have
scheduled a time to meet with teachers on the November 19th or 20th parent-teacher conference days.
I would like to thank the
National Honor Society and Student Council members for organizing our first
blood drive of the year. The first event
was a success as there were about 50 units of blood collected. The groups have scheduled two more blood
drives for March 2nd in the small gym at the elementary building and
May 19th in the auditorium at the high school.
If you are interested in donating blood on either of these dates, please
watch for information in later newsletters on how to sign up.
The Campbell-Savona School District
is working with the Steuben County Department of Health to organize a
vaccination clinic that will be held for our students sometime in the near
future. You should have received a packet
of information from the health department to fill out. If you are interested in having your child
get the seasonal flu and/or the H1N1 vaccination at this school clinic, please
fill out the paperwork and return it to the health department as soon as
possible. We are looking for volunteers
to assist with this clinic. We do not know the date or time of the clinic
and won’t know it until a few days before it happens as it is organized by the
Department of Health.. If you are interested in being put on the list of
volunteers to help with this event, please contact Lisa Fleet at 527-9800 ext.
1411 or lfleet@cscsd.org.
I also want to remind all
students and parents of the district’s new snack/treat policy. Effective immediately, all treats/snacks
brought from home to share with others must be pre-packaged and store
bought. This is for the health and
safety of all of our students.
As always, if you have any
questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at 527-9800 ext.
1451 or at lhawken@cscsd.wnyric.org.
Lisa Hawken, High School
Principal
Campbell–Savona Central School presents “The Will
Rogers Follies: A Life In Revue!”
Will Rogers was a unique American who,
though he died almost sixty years ago, remains a beloved figure remembered for
his humor, his wisdom, and his just plain common sense. Claiming to have never
met a man he didn’t like, Rogers was America’s first international multimedia
sensation, whose wit and homespun wisdom went straight to the nation’s heart.
The character of Will Rogers (portrayed by Jared Allen) narrates his life story
through a series of spectacular Ziegfeld Follies production numbers which come to
life with Ziegfeld Girls, Ziegfeld’s Favorite, wranglers, and cowgirls.
“The Will Rogers Follies: A Life In
Revue” is a journey, reviewing Will's life and adventures through singing,
dancing, roping and pure humor. Each unforgettable scene, song and dance, will
keep your mouth smiling, your hands clapping and your toes tapping.
Performances of “The Will Rogers Follies:
A Life In Revue” are Thursday, November 19th at 7:30pm, Friday,
November 20th at 7:30pm, Saturday, November 21st at
7:30pm, and Sunday, November 22nd at 2:00pm in the Stephen B. Morley
Auditorium at the Campbell-Savona High School.
General admission tickets for “The Will
Rogers Follies: A Life In Revue” are $8.00 each and available by calling the
box office at 527-9850. Reserve your seats today.
The Drama Club will be
holding a pasta dinner before the Friday, November 20th show in the
Campbell cafeteria from 5:30-7:00pm.
Dinner will include pasta, meatballs, salad, drinks, and a cookie
dessert. $6.00 Adult, $3.00 children (6
and under). Dinner tickets can be
purchased in advance by calling the box office at 527-9850. Show tickets purchased separately.
Seniors: The college application
process
The time for seniors to begin
applying to colleges and universities is NOW!!!
Mr. Burns has finished meeting with each senior to discuss future plans
and has explained the process for filling out applications.
There are several ways for
students to apply to college. First,
they can apply online. This is probably
the easiest and quickest way to apply.
However, there will be one or two supplemental pages that need to be
printed off. Usually, these are for the
guidance counselor to fill out. Please
turn these in to Mr. Burns in a timely fashion.
The other way to apply is to fill out a paper application and mail it
in. It is important to write neatly and
make the application look as professional as possible.
Once the application is
completed, students need to bring it in to Mr. Burns. He will sit down with the student and review
the application. Finally, the school
will include a transcript and mail the completed application.
The only way, we in the
guidance office, know a student has applied to college is when the student
tells us. It is important to communicate
that with us so that we can forward the appropriate materials from our school
to the colleges you are applying to.
Colleges usually will not make any decisions until the application is complete.
It is important for students
to remember to pay attention to the application deadlines. We do not want you to miss out on any
opportunities because a deadline was missed.
Many colleges
host fall open houses in the month of November.
Information regarding these programs can be found on the college’s
website. Open house programs provide an
opportunity for students and parents to visit the campus, meet with admissions
representatives and speak with current students.
Please call Mr. Burns at
527-9800 ext. 2441with any questions regarding any or all parts of the
application process.
Restriction List and SOS:
Students are placed on
restriction if they are failing one or more subjects. Students on restriction have limited passes
and privileges while at school to ensure they are in their study halls and
classes making up their work and improving their grades. Students who are on restriction must attend two SOS sessions each week and produce
passing work for the week in order to participate in athletic contests, club
events, and other school-wide functions including dances the following
week. If your child is failing one or
more subjects on their report card, please encourage him/her to take the
appropriate steps to pass their classes and get off the restriction list! SOS is
held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:10-4:10pm and Wednesdays from 7:00-8:00am
in Mr. Cranmer’s room. SOS started the
week of October 12th.
After School Expectations:
Students are not permitted in
the building after 4:00pm if they are not part of a school event, practice or
game. Students who are in the building
after 4:00pm waiting for a practice to start need to be in the gym lobby area
only. Students are not permitted to be
in the hallways unaccompanied after 3:10pm.
Students who have late practices and/or games need to make arrangements
to go home after school. There are times that kids have to return to
the building after hours to retrieve items from lockers. This should be done on a limited basis as our
custodians are busy in the evening and have to stop to assist students that
need to return to lockers.
The 2010
Campbell-Savona Central School Yearbooks will be on sale through Friday,
November 13th. Again this
year we will be taking orders by mail as opposed to having teachers collect
orders in each classroom. We feel that
this will be less disruptive to your child’s classroom and be a more secure
system for handling orders. Contact Sara
Balliett at sballiett@cscsd.org,
or 527-9800 x1132, if you have any questions about ordering your yearbook!
Job Shadowing & Career Panels
Mrs. Paige from
the Career Development Center is available in the Guidance Office every
Thursday. She helps students to explore
careers and to arrange shadowing opportunities.
There are several
Career Panels taking place this month that juniors and seniors are encouraged
to attend. On Friday, November 20th,
Haverling High School is hosting a “Psychology
& Social Work” career panel.
Therapists, social workers, school counselors and psychologists and
several other fields will be represented.
Students should sign up in the Guidance Office if they are interested in
this career field.
Once again this
year, Corning Community College will host “Technology
Day” on November 24th.
Various engineering and technology careers will be represented. For additional information and to sign up,
stop in the Guidance Office.
7th and
8th Grade Incentives
Each year, the 7th and 8th
Grade Teams coordinate and plan incentive activities for all 7th and
8th grade students who, at the end of each marking period, are
passing all of their classes and who did not receive discipline consequences. For the 1st marking period, we
have scheduled a “movie and popcorn in the LGI” incentive to take place on
Tuesday, November 24th during 5th and 6th
periods. We will be showing the movie
“Up”. Students who are eligible to
attend will receive an invitation in homeroom that week.
Each marking period, a
different activity is planned for students to participate in. We have done such trips as ice skating at the
Nassar Civic Center in Corning, outside activity days and an end of the year picnic
at the Legion Fields. Our goal is to
have as many students participate as possible, so please encourage your
students to be passing all of their classes and to avoid discipline issues.
Parent Teacher Conferences
This year’s parent-teacher
conferences will be held on Thursday,
November 19th and Friday, November 20th. We look forward to meeting with parents at
this time of the year. If you did not
sign up for conferences at open house, you should contact your child’s teacher
directly or one of the guidance counselors to set up an appointment.
7th and
8th Grade Parent/Teacher Conferences
The 7th and 8th Grade
Teams will be running “Team” Parent/Teacher Conferences on Thursday, November
19th from 12:00pm until 6:30pm.
Conferences will be held in the Library and will be scheduled in 15
minute intervals. During these
conferences, you will be able to meet with the team of teachers that your
student is currently working with.
Please contact Mrs. Potter at 527-9800 ext. 2442 as soon as possible to
schedule a conference.
National Honor Society
The Campbell-Savona National
Honor Society is preparing to add some new members this fall. Students with a qualifying academic average
have been provided with the necessary information and invited to submit
materials showing their interest in joining the National Honor Society.
Membership in the National
Honor Society is one of the highest honors that can be awarded to a high school
student. The selection of new members is
based upon careful consideration in the areas of scholarship, leadership,
service, and character. No student is
simply inducted because of a high academic average. The National Honor Society
recognizes the total student: one who
excels in all areas. Eligible students
must submit an activity sheet and letters of recommendation to the Faculty
Council for their use in determining the student’s overall accomplishments in
the four areas.
Our local chapter is excited
to induct its new members at a school-wide assembly on December 1st
at 1:00pm.
Don’t Forget Darfur!
The Campbell-Savona Human
Rights Activists is a class of thirteen seniors dedicated to improving the
lives of people suffering from human rights violations around the world. This year’s class consists of Mersadi
Swarthout, Amber Conrad, Tyler Austin, Kyle Knowles, Holly Seager, Greg
Hagenbuch, Brooke Knowles, Ashley Borden, Mishaya Tuttle, Britt LaFritz, Derick
Smith, Sammy Mannel, Amber Knowles and their teacher Mr. Zanetti.
This year’s first of many
projects will be an educational video to inform the community about the
genocide occurring in Darfur. The
students have prepared a video that will be shown to classes in the elementary
and the high school, in an effort to increase the knowledge of an overlooked
tragedy.
The class hopes to raise
enough money to sponsor a Darfuri survivor to come share their experience with
the student body. They also hope to send
school supplies, clothes, bottled water, toys and any other useful donations to
the tent that last year’s class sent to Darfur.
Engaging the community in their projects is a top priority for the
class. Please help them in their efforts
to improve the lives of others. There
will be an informational night the first week of December. Please attend if
possible. More information to come!!
Student Council
The Jr/Sr High School Student
Council would like to announce this year’s officers. Amelia Smith is
Student Body President. Courtney Sutryk is the Student Body Vice
President. This year’s secretary is MacKenna Smith, and our treasurer is
Mersadi Swartout. This group of students has been busy planning events
for our school community. They have been managing the vending machines,
creating subcommittees, volunteering at the Boo Bash and Child Safety events at
the elementary school, planning a Blood Drive, and creating a Vision
Statement. Any student who is still interested in Student Council is
welcome to join this great group of students. Meetings are held in room
1084 at 3:15pm on the first and third Tuesday of every month.
Character Club
“You cannot dream yourself into a character; you must
hammer and forge yourself one.” Henry David Thoreau
The “Character Club” is a group of representatives from
our student body who develop and deliver fun, interesting, and creative ways to
promote character education in the Jr./Sr. High School. Each month, the
