Dear 7th-12th Grade Students and
Parents:
Our school year is off to an
awesome start! We welcomed all of our 7th-12th
grade students back to the new year by meeting with them during class assemblies. This time was used to review our school
rules, expectations, and safety procedures.
The students responded well to the information and have demonstrated
positive behaviors to start the year. I
really have to commend our student drivers for the great job they have done
transitioning to the new parking lot and abiding by our expectations.
You will find your child’s 5
week mid-term report attached to this newsletter. We send this parent newsletter home every 5
weeks with either the mid-term report or the marking period report card. The newsletter includes important dates,
information, and events for parents and students.
The clerical staff is busy
updating emergency cards and information. If you did not return your child’s
yellow emergency card, please send it in to Laurie Galligan as soon as
possible.
As always, if you have any
questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me at 527-9800, ext.
1451 or at lhawken@cscsd.org. I am looking forward to a great school year! Lisa Hawken, High School Principal
After School Expectations: Students are
not permitted in the building after 4:00pm if they are not part of a school
event, practice or game. Students who
are in the building after 4:00pm waiting for a practice to start need to be in
the gym lobby area only. Students are
not permitted to be in the hallways unaccompanied. There are times that kids have to return to
the building after hours to retrieve items from lockers. This should be done on a limited basis as our
custodians are busy in the evening and have to stop to assist students that
need to return to lockers.
Attendance: A reminder to students and parents about a few
things regarding our attendance policy. We
have been working with students to stress the importance of arriving to their
classes on time. Hallway checks are taking place throughout the day at
different locations of the building to ensure students are not tardy to
classes. Teachers have individual tardy
policies and consequences. Students who
are in the hallways after the bell rings without a pass may also receive an immediate
detention slip from Mr. Allen and/or an administrator.
We can’t stress enough how
important it is to be on time for school. Students who arrive to homeroom after
8:05am are considered tardy. Once a
student is tardy 5 times, she/he will be assigned a one hour detention. The homeroom teachers and I have reviewed
this information with students, and I hope to see the number of tardies
decreasing! If your child is assigned a
detention, she/he will be responsible for reporting this to you and serving the
time after school.
Restriction List and SOS: Students
are placed on restriction if they are failing one or more subjects. Students on restriction have limited passes
and privileges while at school to ensure they are in their study halls and
classes making up their work and improving their grades. Students who are on restriction must attend two SOS sessions each week and produce
passing work for the week in order to participate in athletic contests, club
events, and other school-wide functions including dances the following week. If your child is failing one or more
subjects on their 5 week report, please encourage him/her to take the
appropriate steps to pass their classes and get off the restriction list! SOS is
held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:10-4:10pm and Wednesdays from 7:00-8:00am
in Mr. Cranmer’s room. SOS starts the
week of October 12th.
Senior Passes will be delivered to seniors next week and late arrival/early
dismissal privileges will start next week as well. We know the seniors are looking forward to
these privileges. There will be no
senior lounge this year due to safety concerns.
To earn and maintain a senior pass, seniors must have a good attendance
record, be in good academic standing (passing their classes), and be a
productive and positive member of the Campbell-Savona community (follow school
rules and expectations).

The Will
Rogers Follies: A Life In Revue
Campbell–Savona Central School presents “The Will Rogers Follies: A Life In Revue!”
Will Rogers was a unique American who, though he died almost sixty years ago,
remains a beloved figure remembered for his humor, his wisdom, and his just
plain common sense. Claiming to have never met a man he didn’t like, Rogers was
America’s first international multimedia sensation, whose wit and homespun
wisdom went straight to the nation’s heart. The character of Will Rogers
(portrayed by Jared Allen) narrates his life story through a series of
spectacular Ziegfeld Follies production numbers which come to life with
Ziegfeld Girls, Ziegfeld’s Favorite, wranglers, and cowgirls. After marriage,
kids, fame and even a run for the presidency, Will’s life ends with fateful
plane ride he takes with his friend, Wiley Post. Rogers became the biggest,
most popular, and highest paid star of every existing medium of his time -
stage, screen, radio, newspapers, and public appearances.
“The Will Rogers Follies: A Life In Revue” is a journey, reviewing Will's life
and adventures through singing, dancing, roping and pure humor. Each
unforgettable scene, song and dance, will keep your mouth smiling, your hands
clapping and your toes tapping.
Performances of “The Will Rogers
Follies: A Life In Revue” are Thursday, November 19th at 7:30pm,
Friday, November 20th at 7:30pm, Saturday, November 21st at
7:30pm, and Sunday, November 22nd at 2:00pm in the Stephen B. Morley
Auditorium at the Campbell-Savona High School.
General admission tickets for “The Will Rogers Follies: A Life In Revue” are
$8.00 each and available by calling the box office at 527-9850. Reserve your
seats today.
Cafeteria News All students’ accounts must be kept current. There is
a 3 meal limit charge policy in effect in our district. No charging of snacks or ala cart items is
allowed on delinquent accounts.
Pay Schools is available to
parents who would like to view and pay for their child’s lunch account on
line. The child’s ID number is required
to create an account. You can obtain
this number from Pam Drumm at 527-9832.
You can find the pay schools link on the school’s website, www.cscsd.org, under cafeteria services. This is a great method for
adding money to your child’s account!
Student Council The high school welcomes a new
Student Council advisor this year, Mrs. Maria Butts. With a new advisor
comes some change to the structure and role of Student Council. For
example, elections will take place during homecoming week this year, and
students will be asked to vote for a campaigning party made up of a president,
vice president, secretary, and treasurer. All offices will run under one
ticket, resembling the governmental structure of our country. As well,
new procedures for the meetings have been established, from which students will
learn Robert’s Rules of Order. Meetings will take place twice a month,
with one in the morning and one in the afternoon (dates to be announced).
During the first meeting,
students signed up for subcommittees with topics including: homecoming,
bulletin boards, vending machines, winter ball, blood drives, holiday
fundraising, and the handbook. One of Student Council’s first goals is to
provide a homecoming bon fire and dance. This will take place October 10th
from 8:30-11:30pm behind the JV fields at the high school.
It is not too late for
students to become part of this growing organization. New members are
signing up every day. Any student still interested in joining Student
Council can see Mrs. Butts in room 1084 for more information.
Important Student Health Information
Information concerning the
H1N1 flu was mailed home to all households last week. Please help us to reinforce the importance of
washing hands and sneezing/coughing into your arm to help prevent the spread of
germs. Here are some helpful hints for
you and your family:
Parent Teacher Conferences This
year’s parent-teacher conferences will be held on Thursday, November 19th
and Friday, November 20th. We
look forward to meeting with parents at this time of the year. If you did not sign up for conferences at
open house, please contact your child’s teacher directly or one of the guidance
counselors to set up an appointment. If your child is in 7th or 8th
grade, it is best to meet with the team of teachers. It is best to contact Mrs. Potter in the
guidance office to set up this appointment.
She can be reached at 527-9800, ext. 2442.
Halloween
is almost upon us and this month’s
Character Trait is Perseverance, to support this trait Character Club is proud to
announce that any student not on a restriction list will be allowed to wear a
costume to school Friday,
October 30, 2009. Students on
restriction will have the opportunity to attend SOS twice the week before to
become eligible to participate. Students who have persevered so far in the
school year can dress up for Halloween. There will be costume contests held as
well! Judges will be looking for: Most Original, Most Glamorous, Spookiest, and
Most Spirited. Costumes must follow the dress code and may not interfere with
instruction. For safety reasons, masks
and weapons of any kind are prohibited.
